SParms Thermal Base Layer with ThermoTech

SParms Thermal When I received the SParms Thermal Base Layer, I was skeptical. After all, who needs a high-tech, insulated, long-sleeve undershirt for golfing in Florida? Little did I know I would soon find its value very early in 2025. Here’s my review.

Florida Cold

SParms Thermal Base Layer

Yes, it does get cold in Florida—though we refer to it as ‘Florida Cold.’ Our temperature dips can’t be compared to those in the Northeast or Midwest. A chilly 50s day in Florida calls for layering, especially since afternoons usually bring back that glorious sunshine. My blood has thinned after 20 years in the Sunshine State.

I bought an insulated shirt from Patagonia, made of Capilene, for skiing nearly 30 years ago. While it served its purpose, I realize I can’t compare that to newer technologies today. I never liked its ¼ zip design, as I’ve had my fair share of chest hair-zipping experiences! But I probably would not have kept the shirt this long if it had a higher neck.

SParms Thermal Base Layer with ThermoTech

The SParms Thermal Base Layer with ThermalTech has a mock turtleneck. I noticed the ‘snugness’ right away.  The piece fits comfortably in the arms and shoulders and is clingy in the torso.

SParms Blue Circle Logo

When the temperature dropped in Sarasota in the first week of January, I was very happy to test this product.

SParms is well-known for its Sun Sleeves; you’ll often spot the blue circle worn by golfers like Brittany Linicicome and Dylan Frittelli, the official SParms ambassadors. Many LPGA stars, including Rose Zhang, Hannah Green, Georgia Hull, Madelene Sagstrom, and Lydia Ko, also opt for SParms Sun Protection Sleeves. Even the Solheim Cup uniform sleeves were made by SParms, logo-free.

This new long-sleeve base layer is available for Women (black & white XS-XL), Men (black & white S-XXL), and a Unisex Thermal Sleeve (black & white XS-XXL.)  Featuring innovative insulating technology, ThermalTech offers comfort without restricting motion—perfect for golfing in chilly weather.

Not to mention, the material is breathable, stretchable, and durable, providing excellent sun protection. The sheer yet thick fabric fits my body without feeling bulky.

Wear Points

Let’s discuss the various wear points.

The neck design is spot on. I appreciate the mock turtleneck style of SParms—it feels just right compared to my Patagonia’s roomy zip. Plus, the crisp ‘SP’ logo on the neck and sleeve adds a nice touch.

The sleeves fit perfectly, resting just above my wrist without any rising or tightness. Although the chest and torso felt snug (by design), I got used to it quickly.

On my first wear, I put the base layer at the turn when temperatures were dropping. The snug fit kept me warm, and I felt great during my game. The snugness gave me a ‘Superhero’ vibe that reminded me to finish my swing.

Golf shirts are typically looser in the chest, so it initially felt different. However, the warmth and wind protection from the base layer was far preferable to the bulk of thick sweaters.

Golfing in a SParms Thermal Base Layer

For my second wear, I topped the Thermal Base Layer with a light cotton sweater. The day started in the high 40s and warmed to the mid-70s after 18 holes. I stayed comfortable the entire round, pleasantly surprised that the base layer didn’t feel too warm as the day heated up.

On my third wear, I paired it with a Collars & Co. Zen Cotton Reversible Pullover teeing off in only 46 degrees. The temperature peaked at 62, and I felt just as comfortable riding in a speedy cart with the windshield down.

During my first time wearing the Thermal Base Layer, I noticed it rose slightly when I leaned down—but that sensation seemed to fade in subsequent wears. It could have been my pants or just the adjustment to the snug fit.

After playing three rounds in early January with my SParms Thermal Base Layer, I almost forgot I was wearing it. This base layer is a winter essential, and it’s now a must-have in my golf bag!

Sun Protection

The Thermal Base Layer effectively blocks the sun, and I paired it with Oars + Alps Sunny Mint Lip Balm SPF 18 and Face + Scalp Mist SPF 35, along with a wide-brim hat. On my third wear, I opted for a skullcap, which left my face a bit more exposed, and I reapplied the hands-free Mist at the turn. Ultimately, the SParms Thermal Base Layer is a game-changer, combining warmth, comfort, and sun protection for all my winter golfing needs.

Cost of Thermal Base Layer

The SParms Thermal Base Layer is offered at a competitive price of $89.99 on the SParms website. In my recent search on Amazon for “thermal shirts,” I found a range of midweight options at lower prices. Patagonia has a thermal-weight zip-neck shirt priced at $109 and a crew-neck at $99.

Like Sun Sleeves and Shoulder Wraps from SParms, you must remember that quality matters. While there are many cheaper alternatives, it’s worth considering that if a superior sun sleeve was available, the ladies on the LPGA Tour would undoubtedly be wearing them. The Pros trust SParms (unless paid to endorse another brand) because they know SParms delivers the best performance.
